Our National Health Crisis

We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic. 67% of the adult population in the U.S. is either overweight or obese, with over one third being obese (that's more than 72 million adults). 16% of our children are obese. We have seen obesity rates double for adults and triple for children since 1980.

Being obese has physical, psychological, and social consequences for both children and adults, including:

Cardiovascular disease

Type 2 diabetes

Cancer (endometrial, breast, and colon)

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Dyslipidemia (high total cholesterol and/or high levels of triglycerides)

Stroke

Liver and gallbladder disease

Sleep apnea and respiratory problems

Osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and underlying bone within a joint)

Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

Obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes), at one time only seen in adults, are developing in children and adolescents. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and abnormal glucose tolerance, are more likely in obese children.

Exercise Can Help

Physical activity and exercise can facilitate weight loss--especially when combined with caloric reduction--and is very important for the prevention of overweight and obesity, and in maintaining proper weight. In addition to weight control, studies are providing evidence that physical activity can help prevent heart disease, help control cholesterol levels and diabetes, slow bone loss associated with aging, lower the risk of certain cancers, and help reduce anxiety and depression.

In response to our present national health crisis, I launched BodyScripts. I have a BS in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, and retain the following certifications:

ACSM-certified Health Fitness Specialist

ACSM-certified Personal Trainer

RRCA-certified Distance Running Coach

My distance running experience includes completion of over 30 marathons and ultramarathons and numerous shorter distance races over the past 17 years.

My purpose for BodyScripts is to share what I know (and continue to learn) about living a healthy and fit life, and to help people in changing their thinking about their health--how very much they can do for themselves to be healthy and happy. BodyScripts is committed to helping each individual achieve and maintain a healthy fitness by delivering the highest quality in health fitness/distance running training, coaching, and education.
